A video conference was held between the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister of Manipur N Biren Singh, and top officials to review the situation in Manipur. The conference comes after the recent violence on May 3 during a rally organized by All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) against the demand for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. The Manipur High Court had given the directive on April 19. Following the Ministry of Home Affairs' orders, ten more companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were dispatched to the violence-hit state on Friday. To control the situation, five Rapid Action Force (RAF) companies of the Central Reserve Police Force were also dispatched on Thursday.
In response to the situation, prohibitory orders have been issued, internet services suspended across the state for five days, and a night curfew imposed in several districts of the state. The Home Minister cancelled all his programs for the upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka and asked officials to maintain peace as soon as possible. The Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, stated that the incidents were a result of a misunderstanding between two communities and appealed to the people to cooperate with the government in maintaining law and order. As the situation worsened, the state home department asked the district magistrates to issue shoot-at-sight orders in extreme cases. The Centre and the state government are monitoring the situation and making efforts to maintain peace in the state, which has spread from hill districts to other parts of Manipur, including Imphal Valley.
