In a significant development, Cachar Police has successfully dismantled an Indian Premier League (IPL) betting racket operating in Silchar, Assam. The authorities apprehended two individuals named Gautam Roy and Rupal Modak, who were identified as the masterminds behind the IPL betting activities in the region. The arrests took place on Hailakandi town road in Silchar town, where the accused were caught red-handed participating in illegal gambling on a match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
During the operation, the local police authorities seized crucial evidence, including one laptop, eight cellphones, and various suspicious materials from the possession of the arrested individuals. These findings served as critical pieces of evidence to substantiate their involvement in the illicit IPL betting operations.
Superintendent of Police Cachar, Numal Mahatta, revealed that the crackdown on IPL gambling in the district had been significantly intensified, leading to the apprehension of several individuals in previous operations as well. Acting on secret information, the police launched an early morning operation in the Shivaji Nagar area of Silchar town, resulting in the arrest of Gautam Roy and Rupal Modak. Notably, these two individuals were running the entire IPL gambling network across the Barak Valley region.
Upon searching their possessions, the authorities recovered a staggering amount of Rs. 39 lakh, along with the aforementioned laptop, eight mobile phones, and three ledger books. These findings further solidified the case against the accused individuals and became vital evidence for the ongoing investigation.
A formal case has been registered regarding the betting racket, highlighting the gravity of the charges. Superintendent of Police Cachar, Numal Mahatta, emphasized that the arrested individuals had been operating an illicit IPL gambling network in the Barak Valley area.
Meanwhile, Assam Police's crackdown on gambling and betting during IPL matches in the state has gained momentum. In a separate operation, Hojai Police uncovered a scam and apprehended five individuals from Lanka, seizing Rs. 8 lakh in cash and four mobile phones from their possession.
The fight against illegal gambling extends beyond Silchar and Hojai. In 2022, Nagaon Police successfully apprehended six gamblers during an illicit betting raid in the Katimari Grant area. The local authorities seized Rs. 2 lakh, a television, betting sheets, and several mobile phones during the operation.
Additionally, on May 1 of this year, Assam Police arrested Surendra Jain, a resident of Shivan Nagar in Bongaigaon, for his alleged involvement in IPL betting in the state's Bongaigaon area. Surendra Jain is believed to be the mastermind behind the IPL betting operations and faces serious charges for his participation in the illegal gambling network.
The recent crackdowns and arrests by the Assam Police signify the government's commitment to eradicating the menace of illegal gambling and ensuring fair play during the IPL matches. The intensified operations across various districts of Assam are expected to strike a blow to the nefarious activities of those involved in IPL betting rackets.
