Guwahati: Dr. R Ravi Kannan, a surgical oncologist from Assam, has been awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2023. The award, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of Asia, recognizes individuals for their "exemplary courage, integrity, and selfless service" in the fields of government, public service, and creative leadership.
Dr. Kannan was honored for his work in revolutionizing the treatment of cancer in Assam through his people-centered and pro-poor programs. He founded the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Silchar in 2007, which has since become a leading cancer treatment center in the region. The hospital offers free or low-cost treatment to patients from all backgrounds, regardless of their ability to pay.
Dr. Kannan has also developed innovative programs to improve cancer prevention and early detection in Assam. He has trained thousands of health workers in cancer screening and awareness, and he has established community-based cancer support groups.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Kannan said that he was "deeply humbled" by the award. He dedicated the award to all the patients and colleagues who have supported his work over the years.
