Nazira: The Assam Police has suspended Additional Superintendent of Police, Charaideo Subhalakshmi Dutta, who has been accused of torturing her housekeeper in Nazira.
Dutta was placed in close reserve near the Assam Police Headquarters on August 30. The decision to suspend her was taken in the interest of a fair investigation, said Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh.
The shocking incident came to light on August 26, when the victim, identified as Anima Praja, filed a formal complaint against Dutta. Praja alleged that Dutta had poured scalding hot water on her body and confined her in a bathroom.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against Dutta at Nazira's Adarsh police station.
The DGP said that a departmental inquiry is being carried out by the Inspector General of Police (North East Region). Further action will be taken against Dutta based on the findings of the inquiry, he added.
The suspension of Dutta comes at a time when the Assam Police is under fire for its handling of several cases of violence against women. In recent months, there have been several cases of women being raped and murdered in the state.
The Assam Police have been urged to take strict action against Dutta and ensure that she is brought to justice. The suspension of Dutta is a welcome step, but it is important that the police also take steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
