Guwahati: On September 1, 2023, the Assam government is poised to commence academic sessions at three newly constructed medical colleges within the state. These institutions, situated in Nalbari, Nagaon, and Kokrajhar, have all secured approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to commence MBBS courses during the 2023–24 academic year.
Each of these colleges is equipped to admit 100 students into their MBBS programs. The inauguration of these medical facilities will feature the presence of key figures, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presiding over the event in Nagaon, Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah in Nalbari, and Health Minister Keshab Mahanta participating in Kokrajhar's inauguration.
Notably, the last medical college to become operational in the state was Dhubri Medical College & Hospital, which received NMC approval for 100 MBBS seats in 2022.
The inauguration of these three new medical colleges represents a significant stride in the Assam government's ongoing endeavours to enhance the state's healthcare infrastructure. Moreover, it is expected to alleviate the shortage of doctors currently experienced in the state.
