Michael Vaughan, the former skipper of the England cricket team, expressed criticism towards Gautam Gambhir, the coach of Lucknow Super Giants, for his on-field altercation with Virat Kohli during the IPL 2023 match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Reports suggest that Gambhir joined in after the argument between Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq and Kohli during the game. Both Gambhir and Kohli were separated by teammates after their heated exchange.
Vaughan stated that confrontations can occur between players in cricket, but coaches should not get involved. According to Vaughan, coaches should remain in the dugout or dressing room and focus on strategies rather than interfering in the game.
Kohli and Gambhir were fined heavily for violating the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 Code of Conduct. Gambhir was fined 100% of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct, and Kohli was also fined 100% of his match fee for his actions during the game. Both admitted to the Level 2 offence under Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct.
