Mumbai: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been ranked the top central banker in the world by Global Finance magazine. Das received an A+ rating in the magazine's 2023 Central Banker Report Cards, followed by Thomas J. Jordan of the Swiss National Bank and Nguyen Thi Hong of the State Bank of Vietnam.
The magazine praised Das for his "steady hand" in guiding the RBI through the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic slowdown. It also noted his efforts to promote financial inclusion and stability in India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Das on his recognition, calling it a "proud moment" for India. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman said that Das's leadership of the RBI has "withstood the recent tests and challenges."
Das has been RBI governor since December 2018. He is a former finance secretary and has held several other senior positions in the government.
The Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards are based on a survey of economists, bankers, and financial analysts. The magazine evaluates central bankers on their handling of inflation, economic growth, currency stability, and interest rate management.
Das's rating is a significant achievement for India and reflects the RBI's growing stature on the global stage. It is also a testament to Das's leadership and commitment to sound monetary policy.
