Majuli: Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the global leader in lighting solutions, has undertaken a remarkable initiative to illuminate 43 villages on Majuli Island, Assam, with solar street lighting. The project, carried out in collaboration with Evangelical Social Action Forum (ESAF), is a significant part of Signify's Har Gaon Roshan Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, dedicated to fostering sustainable rural development.
Majuli Island, known as the cultural capital of Assam, is one of the largest river islands globally and home to diverse ethnic groups that have resided there for centuries. The island also boasts abundant flora and fauna, providing a natural habitat for numerous rare and endangered species, particularly migratory birds that seek refuge during the winter months.
However, during the monsoon season, the swirling waters of the Bramhaputra River render the island inaccessible, cutting it off from the mainland and bringing life to a halt. After sunset, the island plunges into darkness, posing risks to personal safety and hindering economic activities.
Acknowledging these unique challenges faced by the local population, Signify collaborated closely with ESAF to install 100 solar-powered streetlights, effectively illuminating the streets and ensuring safer mobility during nighttime. Additionally, the company donated 2,000 solar portable lamps to households, replacing hazardous kerosene lamps and providing clean and affordable indoor lighting solutions. This initiative is expected to benefit over 32,000 residents on the island.
Shri Bhuban Gam, Honorable MLA of Majuli constituency, expressed his appreciation, stating, "The well-being of our people is of utmost importance, and this project will significantly impact the lives of those residing on the island, offering them access to clean and affordable energy. We commend Signify for their efforts in enhancing the safety of our local community."
Natasha Wadhwa, Head of CSR at Signify Innovations India Limited, shared her thoughts on the project, saying, "By illuminating the lives of more than 32,000 inhabitants of the picturesque Majuli Island through sustainable solar lighting solutions, Signify is not only brightening the present but also paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come. We take pride in playing a part in illuminating the path towards a greener and more equitable world."
The 'Har Gaon Roshan' project focuses on promoting rural development by providing solar energy-based lighting facilities in rural villages, enhancing safety for women and children after sunset and extending the working hours of the village, thereby enabling economic activities during the evening hours. Signify's efforts in Majuli Island represent a significant stride towards a safer, more sustainable, and brighter future for the local community.
