A formal dress code is implemented for teachers in Assam's higher education institutes

Dispur: The Assam Department of Higher Education has imposed a prohibition on teachers wearing attire that is flashy or casual during their duty hours. The department's directive mandates that teachers opt for clean, modest, and respectable clothing in muted and sober colors.

It has come to the attention of the department that some teachers of higher educational institutes are in the habit of wearing the dress of their choice, which sometimes does not appear to be acceptable to the public at large. "Since a teacher is expected to be an example of decency, especially while discharging their duties, it has become necessary to follow a dress code that should reflect a sense of decorum, decency, professionalism, and seriousness of purpose at the workplace," a notification issued by the department said.

A dress code has been established by the Department of Higher Education for teachers in all higher educational institutions, specifying the following guidelines: (1) Male educators are required to present themselves in appropriate formal wear only, including formal shirts and pants or traditional dhoti-pyjama, while avoiding casual items such as polo shirts, T-shirts, and jeans. (2) Female teachers are expected to adhere to decent attire such as salwar suits, sarees, mekhela chadors, and other traditional clothing, while refraining from casual wear like T-shirts, jeans, and leggings. (3) Both male and female teachers are encouraged to choose clean, modest, and respectable clothing in muted tones that do not appear flashy. The use of casual and party clothing is strictly discouraged.
