Dispur : Assam implements ban on plastic water bottles under 1000 ml.
The Assam Environment and Forest Department has issued a recent notification imposing ban on plastic water bottles below 1000 ml capacity, encompassing their production, import, storage, distribution, sale, and use within the state. Effective October 2, 2023, this regulation aims to address the ecological and health hazards associated with single-use plastic (SUP) items. These items are notorious for their littering potential, causing immediate and long-term environmental damage. The responsibility for implementing the notification falls on urban and rural local bodies, the district administration, the police department, and the Pollution Control Board of Assam. Furthermore, in line with the announcement by Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state will also enforce a ban on sub-one-litre single-use plastic water bottles, starting October 2nd. This step reflects Assam's commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.
