Assam Public Works president files Rs.1 crore defamation case against former Chief Justice of India

case against former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi

Abhijeet Sharma, president of the Assam Public Works (APW), has filed a defamation case against former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, for Rs.1 crore. Sharma has been critical of the family tree verification fraud in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. He has also filed a petition to ban Gogoi's book "Justice for the Judge: An Autobiography," claiming that it contains offensive content. Gogoi, who was the CJI that delivered the verdict on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute, had previously been implicated in the NRC scam for allegedly obstructing the investigation. The former Assam NRC coordinator, Hitesh Dev Sarma, accused Gogoi of causing obstructions during his tenure as state coordinator. Sarma has since been appointed as the new state coordinator after the transfer of Prateek Hajela, who is currently facing a case in the Kamrup (Metro) chief judicial magistrate's court.
