On Thursday, MC Mary Kom, a prominent boxer, made an appeal to the Indian government to intervene and control the violence that occurred in Manipur. Violence had broken out in the northeastern state during a tribal protest on Wednesday, prompting the deployment of the Army and Assam Rifles to the area.
Through her Twitter account, MC Mary Kom shared pictures of the violence and called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to help her state. She tweeted, "My state Manipur is burning, kindly help."
According to a defence spokesperson, the Army, Assam Rifles, and local police were able to contain the violence by morning. The forces have already rescued around 4,000 individuals from the violence-affected areas and are relocating them to safer places. The spokesperson also mentioned that flag marches are being carried out to maintain law and order.
The violence started during a 'Tribal Solidarity March' organized by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district. The march aimed to protest the demand of non-tribal Meiteis, who are the dominant community in the Imphal Valley, for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The rally was attended by thousands of protesters, and it resulted in clashes between tribals and non-tribals. The violence later spread to other districts, according to a senior police officer.
