In a thrilling finale of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) emerged victorious by defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) by five wickets at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday. This triumph secured CSK's fifth IPL title.
During the summit clash, GT set a challenging target of 214/4 in 20 overs, with Sai Sudharsan's explosive 96 off 47 deliveries before rain interrupted play. After the resumption, CSK faced a revised target of 171 runs to win in 15 overs and surpassed the 100-run mark in 9.1 overs.
CSK's openers, Devon Conway (47 off 25 balls) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (26 off 16 balls), laid a solid foundation with a 74-run partnership for the first wicket. Despite quick contributions from Ajinkya Rahane (27 off 13 balls) and Ambati Rayadu (19 off 8 balls), GT's Mohit Sharma made a strong comeback with tight bowling.
However, in the 12th over, Shivam Dube's consecutive sixes off Rashid Khan's deliveries reduced the required runs to 38 in the final three overs. Ravindra Jadeja, who arrived at the crease, snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by smashing 10 runs in the last two balls. He hit a six on the penultimate ball and sealed the tournament with a six on the final delivery.
Earlier, Sai Sudharsan's blistering knock of 96 off 47 balls, supported by Saha's fine innings of 54 off 39 balls, propelled Gujarat to a competitive total. CSK's Matheesha Pathirana claimed two wickets, while Deepak Chahar and Ravindra Jadeja scalped one each.
Notably, the match, originally scheduled for Sunday, May 28, was moved to the reserve day on Monday. The intense encounter provided a fitting end to the IPL 2023 season.
