The highly-publicized murder case of Dr. Sarita Toshniwal from Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in 2014 will be decided on Friday.
The police arrested two individuals, a doctor and a ward boy, in connection with the murder that occurred nine years ago on May 9th.
According to the authorities, the doctor, identified as Deepmoni Saikia, who was a second-year PG student of the obstetrics and gynecology department of AMCH, hatched a plan to kill Sarita a month prior and sought the help of Keru Mech, a ward boy, to carry it out. Deepmoni and Sarita had previously worked together in the same department.
"Deepmoni and Sarita had a friendly relationship. However, they had not been on good terms for a few months. Deepmoni used to call Sarita on her mobile, but she never responded. After being rejected by her, he decided to take revenge. He hatched a plan and enlisted Kiru's assistance, promising to make his job permanent. He even threatened to fire him if he declined," the authorities said after arresting the accused.
“On May 8th, Deepmoni was assigned night duty with Sarita, but he was absent due to illness. Sarita was on duty alone, with only a ward boy and a nurse. The following morning (May 9th), Deepmoni and Kiru committed the crime after the on-duty nurse left,” the police stated.
The police reported that Kiru attempted to strangle Sarita while she slept, causing her to scream loudly. Deepmoni then forcibly restrained her to the ground as she attempted to break free.
After the crime was committed, the accused did not stop there. They removed the victim's clothing and molested her, according to the authorities.
After nine years since the terrible incident, the verdict for the accused is expected to be announced today.
