According to the latest report from the French news watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, India has slipped down to the 161st rank out of 180 countries in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index. This is a significant drop from India's previous rank of 150 last year, and Pakistan has now replaced India at the 150th rank.
The top 10 ranks in the World Press Freedom Index 2023 are occupied by Norway, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Portugal, and Timor-Leste.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF), also known as Reporters sans frontières, has assigned India a ranking of 161/180 and a score of 36.62. It's worth noting that India had a press freedom score of 41 in 2022 when it was ranked 150th.
The RSF report also highlights the pressure that many journalists in India face, leading them to censor themselves. This situation is alarming and must be addressed to ensure a free press in India.
It's crucial to safeguard press freedom, which is a cornerstone of any democratic society. Without a free and independent press, citizens may not have access to accurate information, and their ability to make informed decisions can be compromised. Therefore, it's essential to uphold and promote press freedom globally.
