In a tragic incident, a 22-year-old woman lost her life after the car she was traveling in with her family got stuck in neck-deep water in Bengaluru on Sunday. The unfortunate incident occurred at KR Circle underpass, located a short distance from Vidhana Soudha, the state legislature of Karnataka.
Upon receiving the distress call, the fire and emergency services personnel swiftly responded to the scene. With the help of bystanders who were already attempting to rescue those trapped in the submerged car, they managed to save five individuals, including the driver. However, despite their efforts, the young woman could not be saved.
The victim, identified as Bhanurekha, was employed as an engineer at Infosys. Following the incident, she was immediately taken to St Martha's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The news of the tragedy reached the newly elected Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who promptly visited the hospital to assess the situation. Expressing his condolences, he announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs for the family of the deceased and assured free treatment for those admitted to the hospital.
In a statement to PTI, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah explained, "The family, hailing from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, had hired a car to visit Bengaluru. Bhanurekha was employed at Infosys. Due to the heavy downpour, the barricade at the underpass fell, and the driver took the risk of crossing, which should not have been attempted."
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by flooded underpasses during heavy rainfall. Authorities and individuals are urged to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent such unfortunate accidents in the future.
