The North East Regional Centre in Guwahati, a part of the prestigious Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has embarked on a month-long workshop-centered production. The play aims to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the renowned 16th-century Koch general, Sukladhwaja, popularly known as 'Chilarai.' By bringing Chilarai's life to the national stage, the workshop-oriented production seeks to raise awareness of his exploits. The inauguration of this workshop, held on May 27 at Sankar Madhav Kala Krishti Vikas Kendra, witnessed esteemed guests including Prabin Kalita, resident editor of The Times of India, emphasizing the importance of showcasing talent from Assam on a national platform. Suresh Goduka, Regional Director of IGNCA's North East Regional Centre, highlighted the significance of Chilarai's historical accomplishments, stating that the workshop aims to make them known throughout India. Notable personalities, such as Prabhat Goswami, a prominent theatre director and artist, and Sailendra Pandey, a member of the CBFC adviser panel, graced the event. The workshop features artists from various districts of Assam, and the culminating stage production, "Mahaveer Chilarai," will be presented in Hindi on June 27. Leading the workshop-oriented production is Himangshu Sharma, a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Award.
