Montbéliard Man Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Repeated Death Threats and Terrorism Apology

Montbéliard Man Death Threats

In a recent court ruling, a resident of Dijon faced the consequences of his alarming actions, resulting in a three-year prison sentence for making repeated death threats, engaging in criminal activities, and expressing support for an act of terrorism. This individual, identified as a practitioner of radical Islam, has been classified as highly dangerous, warranting strict measures. The victims, a young Étupes resident and her family, have endured a year-long ordeal filled with fear and apprehension.

The unsettling events unfolded on April 18, 2022, when 25-year-old Fabio Califano, hailing from Dijon, approached a resident of Étupes to propose marriage. Alongside the traditional Turkish garment, obtained during what he described as a leisurely trip, Califano presented other gifts that most women would cherish, including a package of flour, incense, and spices.

The victim's father, distraught by the circumstances, raises a haunting question: "What would have transpired if the police had not intervened?" The previous night, Califano had unleashed a series of terrifying threats against the 17-year-old girl and her family through phone calls. His menacing words included the chilling promise to "burn you all" and "cut your throats." Moreover, he brazenly stated his intention to commit rape, citing a self-proclaimed entitlement to do so.

During the court proceedings, the stout defendant, sporting a full beard, claimed that his visit aimed to offer an apology for his previous conduct. However, this incident was not the first instance of his volatile behavior. Just days prior, upon returning from a trip, Califano had sent a distressing message to the young woman with whom he had engaged in a three-week Facebook conversation. The reason behind his outrage? She had refused, even then, to marry him. In his message, he chillingly declared, "Soon we will cut your throats and play football with your heads," accompanied by a video depicting a beheading scene.

The father of the teenager, consumed by anger and devastation, expresses his disillusionment, stating, "Islam is not what I have been led to believe for all these years. The religion promotes peace, tolerance, and respect... We have endured a year of living in constant fear."

Although acquitted on one count, Fabio Califano received a three-year prison sentence and an additional five years of mandatory social work. The terms of his punishment include undergoing treatment, employment requirements, a ban on contacting the victim, and confinement to the Doubs department. Califano has now been registered as an individual under surveillance (S) due to his radicalized tendencies.
